The Exultate Jubilate was created by artist Kirsti Ottem Langeland, an artist who lived in Trondheim, Norway. Kirsti loved art and classical and described herself as tall, creative, capricious, depressive, and humourous. She tended to lapse into reveries, melancholy, and obsessions, which is why she spent considerable time in silence with her pencils, brushes, and calligraphic pens. She believed in God, love, art, intelligence, common sense, kindness, music, honesty, and BMWs. She was inspired to draw "Exultate Jubilate" while listening to Cecelia Bartoli’s interpretation of Mozart arias. The original was created in ink, pencil, crayons, and gold and silver paint.
Soprano Jill Freuden found Kirsti's art on the Internet while researching Mozart's music. She was immediately drawn to the work, and emailed Kirsti asking permission to use it for our 2002-2003 poster. Kirsti not only gave the chorale rights to use the art for its poster, but gave permission to use the image indefinitely. We have adopted this magnificent work as part of our branding. Kirsti died in 2007 in France after struggling with breast cancer for several years.
