| Trinity Lutheran Church is at the southwest corner of 8th Avenue and 10th Street in the Normal Hill area of Lewiston (not downtown and not in the Orchards).
Eighth Avenue runs east-west and 10th Street runs north-south.
It is approximately two blocks west of Lewiston High School.
Directions for people coming from Moscow or Pullman:
Caution: do not speed going down the Lewiston grade, where the speed limit is only 55. Take the Lewiston exit and . . .
- As you cross the bridge over the Clearwater River, just after you've gone through the first traffic light in north Lewiston, stay in the right lane.
- Keep going in the right lane as the road curves around Locomotive Park and becomes Lewiston's Main Street. Your first stoplight (not counting the one north of the bridge) will be at 18th Avenue.
- Continue down Main Street almost a mile until the second stop light at 13th Avenue. The Dairy Queen will be on your left.
- Turn left (south) on 13th Street and continue two blocks to the stop sign at Idaho Street.
- Go straight after the the stop sign at Idaho Street and go up the hill which will curve to the left and then back to the right. Continue to the top of the hill where 13th Street deadends into 8th Avenue at a stop sign.
- Turn right (west) on 8th Avenue and drive three blocks to 10th Street, where the church is.
Alternative directions coming up 21st Street (which may be more familiar to you):
- As you cross the bridge over the Clearwater River, just after you've gone through the first traffic light in north Lewiston, move into the left lane.
Keep in that lane as you go through the next traffic light. This will put you on 21st Street.
- Continue up 21st Street to the second traffic light, the one at 11th Avenue. Albertson's supermarket will be on your right.
- Turn right (west) on 11th Avenue, go through one traffic light (at 17th Avenue), and then continue on to 10th Street.
- Turn right (north) on Tenth Street and travel three blocks. The church will be on your left just before you get to 8th Avenue.
Here is the most direct way to get to the church from the downtown area (the first five steps are the same as the directions above for approaching from Main Street; the difference comes with the step marked in red):
- As you cross the bridge over the Clearwater River, just after you've gone through the first traffic light in north Lewiston, stay in the right lane.
- Keep going in the right lane as the road curves around Locomotive Park and becomes Lewiston's Main Street. Your first stoplight (not counting the one north of the bridge) will be at 18th Avenue.
- Continue down Main Street almost a mile until the second stop light at 13th Avenue. The Dairy Queen will be on your left.
- Turn left (south) on 13th Street and continue two blocks to Idaho Street.
- From 13th Street, turn right (west) on Idaho Street. Just before the stop sign go right on the right turn lane (where there's a yield sign instead of a stop sigh). It is only a short distance to Miller Street, so be ready to turn left almost immediately.
- Turn left (south) on Miller Street, your very first left after turning on to Idaho Street. Travel south two short blocks and then up the Miller Grade as it curves to the right and then left. Your next turn will be the very first left after you curve back to the left. Be careful on these curves; this is a two-way street.
- Turn sharp left (east) on 10th Street. This turn is part way up the steep hill that forms the last stretch of the Miller Grade. This part of 10th Street is one of the steepest hills in Lewiston, so be careful (this is also a two-way street). However, this hill is also very short. Continue on up the hill as it curves to the right to the stop sign at the top. Continue straight for one block to the church at the corner of 10th Street and 8th Avenue.
Directions coming from Clarkston:
- As you cross over the Interstate Bridge, turn right at the end of the bridge and follow the route towards the hospital (marked with the blue H sign). You have to angle to the left just after turning right at the end of the bridge. Prospect Avenue parallels Snake River Avenue, at the top of the bluff that makes up Normal Hill.
- Travel south on Prospect Avenue until 7th Avenue. After you get to the top of the hill, this will be the 4th cross street.
- Turn left (east) on 7th Avenue and travel east ten blocks to 10th Street. You will pass the campus of LCSC on your right and pass through the stop sign at 8th Street.
- Turn right (south) on 10th Avenue. Travel south one block to the church at the corner of 10th Street and 8th Avenue.
Some facts to keep in mind about Lewiston, but that aren't absolutely necessary to know in order to get to the church:
- When you are going south in Lewiston, you are usually going uphill, a fact that can be confusing to those like me who associate going north with going uphill.
- Avenues in Lewiston run east-west. Streets run north-south. (This is also opposite to what you might expect.)
- Two of the streets that begin downtown change their names after going south for half a mile or so because they sort of jog when they come up the hill (9th Street downtown becomes 8th Street; 18th Street becomes 17th Street), but 21st Street (the recommended route), 13th Street, and 5th Street do not change their names in that part of town.
- Further south, in the Orchards part of town, 14th Street becomes 4th Street; 17th Street becomes 5th Street; and 21st Street becomes Thain Grade, then Thain Road, then 14th Street, then Ripon Ave., and then Tammany Creek Rd.
- Do not confuse Lewis-Clark State College, one of the four state-supported four-year institutions of higher learning in Idaho (the other three being UI, BSU, and ISU), with Lewis and Clark College, a swanky private school in Portland.
